Benefits of HIIT Training

Holidays are really fun.

Great food.. great scenery.. but sometimes not so great for the diet.

I hate the way 3 months of hard work in the gym, can be destroyed in just 3 days, don’t you?

Anyway, I like my HIIT bits of workout when on holiday. It’s easy to find a place to run in Singapore, and here’s the final 20 minutes HIIT (condensed), at Marina Barrage, after my 1 hour run. We ran from Sofitel SO to the Barrage and back, via the long route which gave us 10K, at least.

Not only do you burn more calories during a HIIT workout, but the effect of all that intense exertion kicks your body’s repair cycle into hyperdrive. That means you burn more fat and calories in the 24 hours after a HIIT workout than you do after, say, a steady-pace run. I like to do BOTH.

Also, once you push into the anaerobic zone (where you’re gasping for breath) you get results. One 2006 study found that after 8 weeks of doing HIIT workouts, subjects could bicycle twice as long as they could before, while maintaining the same pace.

Finally I love HIIT because there’s no equipment necessary! High knees, fast feet, or anything plyometric like jumping lunges work just as well to get your heart rate up fast. I.e. All you need is YOU.

It’s super fun and it helps keep the definition in those abs. Go try!
