The mighty Dragon Fruit!

Untitled

I am a big fan of this Red Beauty.., the Dragon Fruit, Aren’t you ?

It’s juicy and sweet, but surprisingly low in calories.

Low in calories and filling, dragon fruit makes a good choice for anyone watching his calories. One small dragon fruit, weighing 150 grams, but has just 60 calories, i.e. it has very few calories compared to its serving size.

One fruit also provides an estimated 20 mg of vitamin C, which corresponds to 34% of the daily value set for vitamin C. To put it into perspective, that’s half the amount of vitamin C found in an equal serving of oranges but more than three times the amount of vitamin C found in carrots. When you eat dragon fruit or other foods that contain vitamin C, you help with the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. Vit C form an important protein used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. It heal wounds and form scar tissue. It repairs and maintains cartilage, bones, and teeth.

Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants. Antioxidants are nutrients that block some of the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are made when your body breaks down food or when you are exposed to tobacco smoke or radiation. The buildup of free radicals over time is largely responsible for the aging process. Free radicals if not in check can lead to heart disease, and conditions like arthritis.

Do you wonder why you’re always catching a cold and fall sick easily? Well it could be that your body lacks Vit C. As the body is not able to make vitamin C on its own, and it does not store vitamin C, it is important to include plenty of vitamin C-containing foods in your daily diet. So eat more Dragon Fruit!

Dragon fruit can be used as a natural remedy for constipation. Dragon fruit seeds, in particular, appear to have strong laxative properties and can therefore be highly effective at stimulating bowel movement. It also has tons of fiber. A 150 gm portion of dragon fruit delivers 3 grams of fiber, which is equivalent to 12% of the daily reference value for dietary fiber. Furthermore, dragon fruit seeds contain polyunsaturated fatty acids which have been shown to exert laxative effect.

The fruit is low in calories. 150 gm of 1 tropical dragon fruit contains about 60 calories. So if you want a snack but are trying hard to lose weight, choose Dragon Fruit instead of a candy bar!
