Being candid about Coconut Oil

Fat will kill you. That’s what we were told growing up.

These days, we know that it is in fact, sugar that will kill you, and certain good fats will actually prolong your life.

Science had indeed done a 180° where saturated fats are concerned.

Coconut oil is made up of beneficial medium-chain fatty acids, MCFAs, that are easily digested and converted into energy. Like all fats, coconut oil is a blend of fatty acids. Coconut oil contains an unusual blend of short and medium chain fatty acids, primarily lauric (44%) and myristic (16.8%) acids. It is this unusual composition that may offer some health benefits. It improves blood cholesterol profile, promotes heart and artery health.

The small molecular size of MCFAs facilitates its penetration into the cell membrane without the need for a carrier protein. Upon entry into the body cells, MCFAs are digested instantly and the fat-soluble nutrients can be absorbed rapidly.

Regular intake of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is able to rev up metabolism, speeding up fat burning, which is good news for those who want to shed off the extra pounds. Me and hubby normally take 3 teaspoons of (extra virgin, cold pressed) coconut oil a day, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. It is important not to take any sugar or carbohydrates then, otherwise the body will switch to burn glucose and not fats.

Coconut oil also increases absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E, K, beta-carotene, and some amino acids, also some of the B vitamins. Studies show it may be helpful in preventing liver disease, kidney disease, Crohn’s disease, cancer and many infectious illnesses, such as the flu, herpes, bladder infections, and candida, to mention just a few. Studies are now being done to test it effectiveness against serious illness such as AIDS and SARS. Preliminary results have been very promising.

Coconut oil produces ketone bodies, an alternative fuel for your brain which your body makes when digesting coconut oil, and that’s how coconut oil may offer profound benefits in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
