Tarting around, with Tart Cherries

If you work out daily, like I do, you are bound to get sore muscles. Here’s my big (well maybe not so big) secret, how to help muscle repair, and shorten recovery time. One of nature’s most potent classes of flavonoids is anthocyanins. These powerhouse nutrients are responsible for the deep colors in some berries, fruits, and vegetables. And my favorite of these, are the anthocyanin-rich foods, tart cherries!

Tart cherries are superior to other berries, because they provide high levels of novel anthocyanins than even blueberries or raspberries. In fact, tart cherries are also high in phenolics and rank 14th among the top 50 foods for highest antioxidant content per serving, surpassing such well-known antioxidant sources as red wine and dark chocolate.

The effects of tart cherry juice consumption were tested in a double-blind, randomized trial of runners participating in a 24-hour relay race. Runners drank two 355 milliliter beverages containing either tart cherry juice or a placebo beverage daily for one week prior to the race and during the race. Both groups reported pain after the race. But the runners who drank tart cherry juice experienced a substantially smaller pain increase after the race.. Amazing innit?? So runners take note, that tart cherries can provide some defense against muscle damage;)
