I used to be a light traveler, until I had a baby! Then all her stuff just took over my bag, and backpacking was a thing of the past. But while family travel has its great rewards and perks too, it can be stressful if you’re a last minute packer. The tips is.. don’t be last minute!
Here are some practical tips on how to pack for a 2 year old.
Start preparing to pack a few days before you travel. Keep a running list of things to bring, or set out items on a table, as you remember them. Pack an extra outfit for yourself in your carry-on bag – just in case. Prevent leaks by packing medicines and toiletries in resealable plastic bags. Don’t forget chargers and cords for your phone and other devices.
Baby bag (we like to use a sports water proof havosack bag as it distributes the weight uniformly on the back)
Diapers (5-6 for the flight. extra for long flights)
We pack a big bag of new diapers too in the luggage as she goes through them fast
Jacket with hoodie for the flight
Socks
Plastic bags (Carry a few medium-size bags for storing soiled diapers, clothes, and shoes)
Disinfecting hand gel and surface spray (travel size)
Small bottles of toiletries, such as your child’s shampoo
Toddler toothbrush and toothpaste
Tissues
Toys and books (especially for the flight when they get anxious or fussy)
Your child’s favorites, plus some new ones to give as surprises along the way.
Packing one or two outfits per day is a good guideline. Heattech for the cold and Airism for the hot weather. Pack light easy to hand wash clothes.
Hangers
baby detergent
Bathing suit
Washable bib
Sun hat and sunscreen
Sippy cups, canteens, or water bottles
Plastic feeding set with utensils
Dry snacks eg. bread, biscuits, cereal ( stuff they also allow you to take on the plane)
First-aid kit
Paracetamol supps and Antihistamine syrup (I always have this)
Saline for the nose and a topical decongestant drop
Collapsible stroller (we have one that is hand carried and fits into the overhead on the plane, and it can also be gate-checked if need be)
Well those are considered the bare minimum. We know of folks who bring sleeping cots, baby seats etc… You will notice how even the bare minimum is a LOT. What are you essentials when traveling with a 2-year-old? Leave a comment!
