ActivEMS .. my latest workout!

I’m really psyched! I recently signed up for the Miha Bodytec Workout, a.k.a ActivEMS and I am excited to see the results.

This programme is a kind of Electro Muscular Stimulation (EMS) training which intensifies any workout routine you engage in. Being the adrenaline and (pain) junkie that I am, I decided to go for the advanced workout as I really want to tone and sculpt my body, and strengthen my core and muscle tone while I am at it.

P1085074

This is Week 1 of my programme, and I will be charting my progress over 10 sessions done over 5 weeks. The objective – to get more cuts, and better muscle definition, and of course, to banish fat from the problem areas ( of course a perky butt is a bonus!)

P1085062

First of all, you need to get suited up. The Suit will be sprayed with water, because water is a better conductor of electricity. The suit has to be super snug so you get the full benefit of the impulse transmission. Electrodes are then fastened to the main muscle areas (legs, waist, abdomen, upper and lower back, chest, shoulders).

P1085066

Depending on what workout you select, you get a different sort of sensation passing through your muscles. For cellulite reduction it is a sort of light tapping sensation. For the advanced workout, it would be more full on electric current, as I would soon find out. However, this sensation is never too much to bear. It can be tuned up or down, depending on how your body takes to it, and how much results you want to see. And you can increase the intensity of the electricity too, if you are sucker for a harder workout! But you know, as they say, no pain, no gain.

P1085127

The higher the impulse the better the results of course, but here, they rather ease you into it. I start off with around 60% of the intensity, but my next session, will probably hit 70%.

During the training all muscle groups are stimulated at the same time, while the participant pre-engages/contracts the muscles at the time of electro impulse sent from the machine. These kind of several seconds electro impulse intervals following contraction and relaxation is far more demanding on the body, and muscle contractions are much stronger than a conventional training.

P1085122

Therefore the training is way more effective. Even if you work out for a mere 20 minutes, you might feel like it was a 1 hour workout! In fact, a 20min session about twice a week is sufficient, but you will still need to add it to your weights and cardio routine to get the best results.

P1085088

The impulses are not harmful to the body at all, but if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, you should not take on the Ems Miha Bodytec workout.

Apart from that, numerous studies shows that there are no negative effects on the cardiovascular system, instead it benefits while improving in cardiovascular strength and endurance.

The Benefits of Miha Bodytec training include :

  1. very low stress on the joints, which leads to prevention of injuries
  2. increased metabolism resulting in fat and body weight loss
  3. tightening of the connective tissue and reduction of cellulite
  4. improvement of cardiovascular system and blood circulation
  5. reduced back pain for people with back problems
  6. increase in muscle strength and mass
  7. improvement in general mobility

Wenisa’s grinning her head off.. as she is about to wipe that smile off my face in a minute!

P1085076

final instructions to brace your core, as the current passes through you. The current is tuned up, to a point where you feel slight discomfort, but not too much.

P1085156

The workout is a mere 20 minutes, but it feels more like an hour. You need to really concentrate to not let the impulse knock the breath out of you…

After the 1st workout, my skin felt super smooth.. like as if all the pores had tightened and the next day, i found my butt was really sore. I had to drink lots of water (pee became concentrated, as water conducts electricity & a lot is loss during the workout) and rest, as my body was tired. I can’t as yet see any drastic improvements as yet, but bear with me.. I hope to report better results soon! I have 10 sessions to go and will be charting my progress right here – inches loss, muscle tone and % body fat (oh, and perhaps butt lift.. haha)

Then, once you’re rested, it’s time to go back for more pain (I mean pain in the nicest possible way). I know I am addicted to it! For more info on the work out I did, check out ActivStudio .

I just had a baby. Not planning on any more. Can this help me? I find it so hard to lose weight

Yes perfect. Not only that – it has a whole host of other benefits. Take for example the strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor exercise, or Kegel exercise consists of repeatedly contracting and relaxing the muscles that form part of the pelvic floor – EMS will help with this for sure.

Good post. I used this EMS to rehabilitate my back in the states and it really worked wonders! I would recommend it for injuries too.. not just weight loss!~

Yes I agree. I have a slight problem in my left knee and I tend to use my right leg too much. I am currently working on it to get my knee aligned again – but you need a good PT that knows what they are doing. Currently Activ Studio has one of the better ones, that I’ve come across

Looks and sounds interesting, but the suit looks pretty bulky. Looks like it only includes bodyweight exercises is it?

    • ciki January 20, 2014 at 7:43 am #

Firstly it is snug – so it is not bulky. It needs to be tight otherwise the points won’t go deep into your muscle. Secondly, body weight is all you need darling… because is it bloody difficult to do it when the pulse comes at you – it’s like carrying a ton of bricks and doing the exercises, if you know what I mean.
