Are you one of those who hates the wet market, and loves to shop in the convenience of the supermarket? Does the smell, the loud sounds and the chaos put you off? Does waking up early to get to the wet market just not seem to be your thing?
True, things are less pretty at the wet market, but here are 5 reasons you should shop at the wet market :
1. You are supporting your local butchers, fishmongers and Vegetable sellers.
Farming is demanding work and with weather, pests and other factors, their job is tougher and their yield poorer. In other words, they work hard for their money. By purchasing directly from the folks at the wetmarket, you are supporting your friendly farmers, butchers etc. and also Malaysia (yay!)
2. The food is fresh.
Most of what you see in the wet market was picked early that morning or the previous day. In supermarkets those apples and cucumbers might be around for days or longer until they show signs of age. It is so much better to get your fresh veges, meat and fruits at the wet market.
3. Your tastebuds know the difference.
This is the reason I never eat supermarket chicken. It has this terrible, deep freeze, plastic smell. I get my chicks fresh at the wet market. Also, vegetables, fish etc, are all more flavor intense, and taste better from the market
4. You save money.
Take RM50 to the wet market and see how much you take home. Even if the products aren’t priced less than their supermarket, the wet market vendors will give you way more for your buck.
5. It is educational.
If you have kids, the best place to learn about how farmers trade their goods, is at the market. Not only that, with such a huge variety of local produce, the children can learn to identify herbs, vegetables and different kinds of roots etc, at the wet market. They might also pick up skills, such as bargaining, and the value of money, such as how much food should cost.
I absolutely agree and I love to shop at wet markets. I can not only get a fresh and healthy food for a cheap price but also enjoy a little chat with locals which I always do 🙂
Yeah in our markets you need to speak cantonese so .. haha! LOL
