Recovery is most certainly just as important as the workout itself, but usually the most neglected part by athletes. Muscle tearing that occurs during vigorous exercise needs to mend before the body takes on the next grueling challenge. And aren’t we constantly putting our bodies through the most challenging routines, in this day and age? Yes and yes!

I prefer Smoothies to Juices because there’s less of an insulin spike, when you opt to take all the fibre into your system, as opposed to just juice. This keeps the body’s sugar levels more consistent and without the peak and trough effect, preventing those horrible dips in sugar levels which makes the body crave for more sugar.

These protein shakes taken within the half hour of a run or aerobic exercise is ideal for encouraging optimum muscle repair.

1. Mint Berries Protein Smoothie

This first smoothie is rich in antioxidants and the superfoods, the berries are employed for a magificent boost. Chia seeds are added for its Omega3s and Maca powder as a rich source of protein. Maca is rich plant sterols, and has a good way of balancing hormones in both male and female. Cauliflower the cruciferous vegetable possesses great anti-cancer properties.

Half banana
Handful strawberries/ raspberries/blueberries
Handful cauliflower
Chia seed 2 tablespoon (recommended rda)
Cucumber 1/2
1 scoop maca
1 drop peppermint
Coconut juice to taste and Consistency

2. Mint Mocha Protein Smoothie

For this second smoothie, I like to call it the Iron power house drink as kale and spinach both are high in iron. Unlike supplements that are heaty and constipating, these natural plant source of iron are easily absorbed and not constipating. This smoothie is great of Vegan and Vegetarians who worry about getting enough iron in their diets. Avocado imparts a great source of Omega 3s and 6s, monounsaturated fats that are essential for good health of the heart, brain .. everything really! Cacao is another superfood high in antioxidants. It imparts a lovely chocolatey taste to this smoothie. Enjoy!

A large handful kale/spinach
A handful organic blueberries
1/2 a banana
1/2 an organic avocado
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 scoop maca
1 drop peppermint
Almond milk to desired consistency

In both smoothies, add a drop of Peppermint to the smoothies before blending. It helps to freshen the breath and adds an energetic spring in my step, post run!
