Manuka Honey.. because not all honey are created equal..
Manuka comes from New Zealand and is gathered from the Manuka bush (Leptospermum Scoparium). Just as not all honey are Manuka, not all Manuka honey has healing properties either. One must look for the “active” label when buying Manuka, because that’s the one with the antibacterial activity. Active means that the honey contains enzymes which constantly react with the honey.
The most amazing recent discovery was that active manuka honey could effectively inhibit the growth of a variety of cancer cell types including breast, skin, and colon cancer. A study from College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the UAE University (UAEU) demonstrated that the addition of exceedingly small amounts of manuka honey, as little as 1.0 per cent, could actually stop the growth of cancer cells. Manuka acts directly by inducing apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in cancer cells.
The key component in Manuka honey that gives it its natural healing poperties is Hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide releases oxygen that has the ability to kill bacteria. The other antibacterial component in manuka honey is methylglyoxal (MG). MG is a compound found in most types of honey, but usually only in small quantities. In manuka honey, MG comes from the conversion of dihydroxyacetone, that is found in high concentration in the nectar of manuka flowers. And that is why not all honey have this amazing effect – it works as a natural antibacterial.
Other uses for Manuka honey include:
Treating minor wounds and burns
Preventing and treating cancer
Reducing high cholesterol
Reducing systemic inflammation
Treating diabetes
Treating eye, ear, and sinus infections
Treating gastrointestinal problems.
What a wonderful, naturally occurring product! God’s healing powers is evident in the creatures he has created.. and in a abundance!
