Beat the Afternoon Sleepiness

It’s just so hard to beat that Afternoon Sleepiness.. especially after a big meal..

So you’ve got a huge meeting scheduled for 2pm, right after lunch.

You seem to have trouble keeping awake and this has been happening more often in the afternoons.

How do you kick, the afternoon sleepiness?

Here are 5 Easy Tips:

1. Don’t eat Carbs

Skip the Carbs, or mixing protein with carbs. Definitely stay away from greasy and rich meals such as the Banana Leaf rice, Nasi Kandar or Fish head curry. Try a huge healthy salad with a light low fat dressing and chicken breast meat. You body does not have to fight to digest the food in your stomach, and as such you will feel less sluggish. A large meal can make a person feel sleepy, especially if it’s rich in carbohydrates. When you eat, your brain diverts energy towards digestion, sending a bunch of red blood cells over to help break down the food and carry the nutrients all over your body. Because so many blood cells are helping out the intestines, there’s less oxygenated blood reaching the brain, so of course you will feel sleepy.

2. Eat a Banana

Bananas provide energizing nutrients like potassium. It gives you energy without being oily. Best kind of instant energy booster and easy to pack and eat, unobtrusively before a meeting.

3. Sip Green Tea

Green tea’s antioxidants, called catechins, scavenge for free radicals that make our body feel run down. Green tea also contains caffeine and theanine, an amino acid that helps calm your nervous system. You will feel calm and alert in the face of an upcoming board meeting.

4. Do some Yoga Stretches

If you have a room to yourself in the office, you can do some simple head and neck stretches to get the blood circulating to your brain. It helps stretch your neck and release tension too.

5. Facial Spray

I like to use Evian. Its cool mist rehydrates skin suffering from overheated or dry office air. It also revives my makeup throughout the day, and keeps me looking fresh at any meeting!
