Watermelon.. the new Viagra!

Watermelon is one of my hubby’s favorite fruits. He likes to eat it after a game of basketball, and thanks to him, there’s never a shortage of it, in my household.

But apart from being a thirst quencher, did you know that scientists claim that it’s good for the bedroom too.

And by that I mean, watermelons actually increase the libido. In fact, they go as far as to say that watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels and intensify eractions!

The active ingredients in a watermelon, called the phyto-nutrients, are naturally occurring compounds that are bioactive, and able to react with the human body to trigger healthy reactions. This red and juicy fruit also contains lycopene, beta carotene and citrulline. Citrulline is amazing as it has the ability to relax blood vessels, much like Viagra does.

When consumed, the citrulline in watermelon is converted to arginine and arginine is an amino acid that works wonders on the heart and circulation system. The citrulline-arginine relationship helps heart health, the immune system and may prove to be very helpful for those who suffer from obesity and type 2 diabetes as well. Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it.

Arginine also helps the urea cycle by removing ammonia and other toxic compounds from our bodies. Citrulline, the precursor to arginine, is found in higher concentrations in the rind of watermelons than the flesh. As the rind is not commonly eaten we really should consider eating it too.

The next time we make juice, I am going to get hubby to dump in the rind as well! More fun in the bedroom, I say.. and why not? 😛

Do you like watermelons.. did you find any “interesting” libido intensifying results with them?
