Milking it for all it’s worth – Almond Milk

Since I’m lactose intolerant, organic Almond milk (unsweetened) is always in my fridge.

The ‘king’ of the plant milk substitutes, almond milk is an obvious choice for vegans and people with lactose allergies.

Almond milk is 50% lower in calories than cow’s milk, and is also great for folks trying to lose weight. Because it’s not an animal product, it has no cholesterol. Cow’s milk and soy milk contains about 8-12 grams of carbohydrates per cup.

Unsweetened almond milk provides less than 1 gram of carbohydrates and no sugar. However, this almond “milk” version is mostly water, and most of the nutrient-dense almonds get strained out of the final product. You don’t get as much calcium, either, unless it’s fortified. So make sure you get your calcium elsewhere, eg. via your diet.

Or just munch on real almonds as and when..  like I do!
